Most carpet manufacturers publish a general recommendation: professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months. That number assumes an average home in an average climate — and Buffalo is not an average climate.
Between November and April, Western New York homes deal with lake-effect snow, road salt, sand, slush, and constantly-wet boots at the door. Every one of those grinds abrasive particles into carpet fibers, which is what actually wears carpet out. Vacuuming pulls up loose dirt, but salt and sand embed at the base of the fiber where a household vacuum can't reach.
Why the standard advice doesn't fit Western New York
For most Buffalo-area homes, we recommend a professional deep clean twice a year: once in late spring after the salt season ends, and once in the fall to reset before winter starts. Homes with pets, kids, or heavy foot traffic (Bills tailgate hosts, we're looking at you) should look at every four to six months in high-traffic lanes.
There's also a warranty issue worth knowing about. Every major carpet manufacturer — Shaw, Mohawk, Stainmaster — requires professional hot-water extraction every 18 months to keep the manufacturer warranty valid. DIY rental machines don't count. If you ever need to make a warranty claim, they will ask for receipts.
The Buffalo cleaning schedule we recommend
The good news: a properly cleaned carpet in Buffalo lasts 3–5 years longer than a poorly maintained one. That's real money — the difference between replacing $4,000 of carpet in year 7 or year 12. Cleaning is the single cheapest thing you can do to extend the life of the second-biggest surface in your home.
